आशेचा किरण

        गेल्या काही दिवसांत, काहीही ठीक झालेले नाही. या विषाणूमुळे जगभरात १ कोटी लोकांना संसर्ग झाला आहे आणि त्याने जणू संपूर्ण जगच थांबविलं आहे. ज्यामुळे आपण बेरोजगारी, आर्थिक संकट, पाहुणचार आणि पर्यटन क्षेत्रातील तोटा आणि काय नाही हे पाहिलयं . जगभरातील शास्त्रज्ञ किमान १४५ लसांवर काम करत आहेत ज्यापैकी २१ लसी मानवी चाचण्यांमध्ये दाखल झाल्या आहेत. आणि कोणत्या क्षणापर्यंत हे असे चालणार आहे? कोणाकळेच याचे उत्तर नाही. पण या सर्वांमध्ये काहीतरी चांगले घडले आहे. भारताच्या दोन उमेदवारांना मानवी क्लिनिकल चाचण्यांसाठी मान्यता मिळाली आहे आणि कोरोना व्हायरस लसींच्या शर्यतीत भारताने प्रवेश केला आहे.

        भारतीय वैद्यकीय संशोधन परिषद (आयसीएमआर), नवी दिल्ली आणि राष्ट्रीय विषाणू विज्ञान संस्था (एनआयव्ही), पुणे यांच्या संयुक्त विद्यमाने भारत बायोटेक इंटरनेशनल लिमिटेड हे पहिले उमेदवार आहेत. या लसीला ‘कोवाक्सिन’ असे नाव देण्यात आले आहे. हे 'सार्स कोव्ह -२' च्या निष्क्रिय कणांचा वापर करून कार्य करते. विषाणूचे हे कण एखाद्या व्यक्तीस संक्रमित होण्यापासून रोखण्यासाठी कार्य करतात. त्या व्यक्तीचे शरीर प्रतिपिंडे तयार करेल आणि कोविड -१९ पासून प्रतिकारशक्ती देईल. भारतीय वैद्यकीय संशोधन परिषदेने म्हटले आहे की ही लस १५ ऑगस्टपर्यंत उपलब्ध होईल. यावर जागतिक आरोग्य संघटनेने उत्तर दिले की लस ४५ दिवसांत उपलब्ध करणे व्यावहारिकदृष्ट्या अशक्य आहे आणि विशिष्ट लसीच्या मानवी चाचण्यांसाठी १२-१६ महिन्यांचा कालावधी लागू शकतो. या लसीच्या बाजारात उपलब्ध होण्याच्या तारखेने एक वाद निर्माण केला आहे.

        तर दुसरा उमेदवार झेडस कॅडिला यांचे ‘झीकोव्ह-डी’ आहे. या महिन्यात तो मानवी चाचण्यांमध्ये प्रवेश करणार आहे. हे प्लास्मिड डीएनए  (Plasmid DNA) वापरुन कार्य करते.

        या लसी स्थानिक असल्याने त्या लवकर आणि कमी किंमतीत भारतीय बाजारात उपलब्ध होतील. चला कोविड -१९ विरूद्ध कमीतकमी वेळेत आपण सुरक्षित आणि प्रभावी उपचार मिळवू अशी आशा करूया.

A ray of hope

        In last few days, nothing has gone right. This virus has infected over 1 crore people worldwide and stopped the whole world. Due to which we have seen unemployment, economic crisis, loss in hospitality and tourism sector and what not. Scientists across the world are working on at least 145 vaccines from which 21 vaccines have entered human trials. And till what point of time this is going to be the same? No one has answer. But in all this something good has happened. India’s two candidates have got approval for human clinical trials and India has entered in the race of novel Corona virus vaccine.

               The first candidate is Bharat Biotech International Ltd in collaboration with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi and National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. The vaccine is named as ‘Covaxin’. It works by using inactive strains of SARS CoV-2. This particles of virus are inactivated in accordance to stop them from infecting the person. Body of that person would generate antibodies and will give immunity from COVID-19. The ICMR has stated that this vaccine will be available by August 15 for which WHO replied that this is practically impossible to launch vaccine in 45 days and human trails of certain vaccine can take 12-16 months. The launch date of this vaccine has created a criticism.

               Another candidate is ‘ZyCov-D’ by Zydus Cadila. It is entering human trials this month. It works by using Plasmid DNA.

               Because these vaccines are local, these vaccines will be available in Indian market early and at minimum cost. Let’s hope we get safe and effective cure against COVID-19 in shortest possible time.
